A tornado in Atlanta forced thousands to seek shelter, and one man was killed when a falling tree brought power lines onto his vehicle.
At one point, an entire tree blows past the vehicle.
The swath of violent weather also toppled trees, demolished homes and knocked out power to thousands.
WHAT'S HAPPENING
The biggest overnight threat of tornadoes remained over Alabama, according to the National Weather Service.
A record-breaking winter storm has killed more than a dozen people across the country. In Texas, millions are without power as electrical grids fail due to snow and cold. In North Carolina, a deadly tornado ripped a county to pieces.
The twister destroyed homes and downed powerlines that left thousands without electricity.
Fultondale Police Chief D.P. Smith said a young man trapped in the basement of his home was pronounced dead at the scene.
Dozens of people were also injured.
The storms struck first on Easter across a landscape largely emptied by coronavirus stay-at-home orders.
