The birth of my premature daughter was not what I expected, and I almost did not survive her delivery. Despite our rocky beginning together, I am so lucky to have experienced each second of it, because SHE was the end result. I have tried to find a way to vent my emotions while helping other women see their emotions are normal, too. I hope you enjoy my unconventional twist to a holiday classic.
On the first day of Christmas
My preemie gave to me
The daughter I never thought would be
On the second day of Christmas
My preemie gave to me
A life-threatening emergency delivery
And the daughter I never thought would be
On the third day of Christmas
My preemie gave to me
An intubation so that I could breath
A life-threatening emergency delivery
And the daughter I never thought would be
On the fourth day of Christmas
My preemie gave to me
A placenta attached to my organs -- counting 3
An intubation so that I could breath
A life-threatening emergency delivery
And the daughter I never thought would be
On the fifth day of Christmas
My preemie gave to me
A complicated hysterectomy
A placenta attached to my organs -- counting 3
An intubation so that I could breath
A life-threatening emergency delivery
And the daughter I never thought would be
On the sixth day of Christmas
My preemie gave to me
30 units of blood to stop my bleed
A complicated hysterectomy
A placenta attached to my organs -- counting 3
An intubation so that I could breath
A life-threatening emergency delivery
And the daughter I never thought would be
On the seventh day of Christmas
My preemie gave to me
My husband down on bended knee
30 units of blood to stop my bleed
A complicated hysterectomy
A placenta attached to my organs -- counting 3
An intubation so that I could breath
A life-threatening emergency delivery
And the daughter I never thought would be

A catheter to allow me to pee
My husband down on bended knee

A complicated hysterectomy
A placenta attached to my organs -- counting 3
An intubation so that I could breath
A life-threatening emergency delivery
And the daughter I never thought would be
On the ninth day of Christmas
My preemie gave to me
A baby no larger than a flea
A catheter to allow me to pee
My husband down on bended knee
30 units of blood to stop my bleed
A complicated hysterectomy
A placenta attached to my organs -- counting 3
An intubation so that I could breath
A life-threatening emergency delivery
And the daughter I never thought would be
On the tenth day of Christmas
My preemie gave to me
A mixture of love and fear washing over me
A baby no larger than a flea
A catheter to allow me to pee
My husband down on bended knee
30 units of blood to stop my bleed
A complicated hysterectomy
A placenta attached to my organs -- counting 3
An intubation so that I could breath
A life-threatening emergency delivery

On the eleventh day of Christmas
My preemie gave to me
A life full of interventions and appointments -- not so carefree
A mixture of love and fear washing over me
A baby no larger than a flea
A catheter to allow me to pee
My husband down on bended knee
30 units of blood to stop my bleed
A complicated hysterectomy
A placenta attached to my organs -- counting 3
An intubation so that I could breath
A life-threatening emergency delivery
And the daughter I never thought would be
On the twelfth day of Christmas
My preemie gave to me
The most beautiful baby I ever did see
A life full of interventions and appointments -- not so carefree
A mixture of love and fear washing over me
A baby no larger than a flea
A catheter to allow me to pee
My husband down on bended knee
30 units of blood to stop my bleed
A complicated hysterectomy
A placenta attached to my organs -- counting 3
An intubation so that I could breath
A life-threatening emergency delivery
