A 'Do the Right Thing' Philosophy

A 'Do the Right Thing' philosophy is something that Goodwill has used as a guiding light for more than 100 years. Whether it's the eco-friendly process of recycling and reusing to keep items out of landfills, employing people with disabilities or other challenges to employment, or inspiring employees and others to get involved, this guiding light has proven that a successful business model can be based on the fundamental beliefs of giving back and working for positive change.

That is why we recently partnered with Horny Toad, a Santa Barbara-based lifestyle apparel company, to "Share the Warmth" this holiday season. Customers can donate their gently used clothes at Goodwill locations across the country, go online to tell Horny Toad about the experience, and receive a 15-percent discount on new Horny Toad clothing. The partnership is valid at participating dealers across the country. Horny Toad has set a goal of 100,000 units donated by Thursday, December 31. If the company meets this goal, Horny Toad will donate $10,000, or 10 cents for every donated item, to Goodwill.

Goodwill decided to partner with Horny Toad because of a strong alignment in serving people with disabilities through the power of work and beyond. At Goodwill, we strive to be a socially conscious company through our environmental stewardship and the skills training, vocational services and community-based programs we provide for people who lack education or job experience, or anyone struggling with gaining or maintaining employment. That is why it is so important to me to think of others not only this holiday season but each and every day.

At Goodwill, we believe in a hand up, not a hand out, so people can achieve economic stability, support themselves and allow individuals, families and communities reach their full potential through the power of work. Goodwill's revenue from the sale of donated items goes to funding job training and enhancing quality of life for many people in need. We can only achieve this when people do good and donate those clothes that are "pre-loved" but still in good condition.

"Sharing the Warmth" inspires hope and self-confidence, helping people from all backgrounds to feel successful, valuable and dignified.
