With the average kitchen remodel costing over $50,000, you may think updating your outdated space is not affordable. But design expert, Kelly Edwards, has a few simple tips that will modernize any kitchen without too much hard work -- or hard-earned cash.

By taking cues from your existing space and working with the appliances, countertops and backsplash you already have, your kitchen can take on a whole look by:

1. Replacing an old range hood with one made from a modern material like copper.
2. Applying a fresh coat of paint to windowsills and softening this area with a contrasting set of drapery panels.
3. Trading out existing cabinet knobs with updated ones that match other fixtures and appliances in the room.
4. Taking down overhead fluorescent lighting and installing recessed lights.

Not only will these simple renovations revive the look of your kitchen, they may just revive your inner Julia Child. Bon appetit!
