I usually combine perception and imagination, but “Redhead” (2005 oil/canvas 36” x 24”) utilizes a surrealist methodology - no perceptual observation except for the face. The nice thing about using yourself as a model is you don’t have to pay yourself to sit (and if you do, it’s win-win). I don’t smoke, but the cigarette provided a necessary diagonal, and with the shades, suggests the drama of the concealed self.
