The anchor will fill the 3 p.m. slot once occupied by Smith before his abrupt departure from the network in October.
The former Fox News host called out autocrats spreading “garbage and lies masquerading as news” in his first comments since leaving the network.
“Intimidation and vilification of the press is now a global phenomenon. We don’t have to look far for evidence of that,” he told the International Press Freedom Awards.
Catherine Herridge will join CBS News as a senior investigative correspondent in November.

Fox News host Shepard Smith has resigned, leaving the conservative news network with very few objective reporters.

The anchor was one of the network's first hires in 1996.
