At 4:43 p.m. on October 4, Sam Leff sent the following e-mail to the Katie Couric news show at CBS:

"As a Margaret Mead trained American anthropologist, my shock and disgust at your inviting the Columbine father on to your program a day after the tragic Amish school shootings to misinterpret evolution and blame the shootings on science and some kind of perverted notion of evolutionary immorality was evidence of a corrupted mentality, so totally misinformed, so disgustedly politically right wing, it was SO BAD I won't even begin to give you the reasons why, because anybody who didn't begin to understand the depravity of this POV shouldn't be working as a dog catcher, let alone even NEAR a camera that beams out to millions of men, women, and children. Such a person needs a total reeducation--Science, Morality, Ethics, Newscasting, Free Speech, a reeducation which I couldn't and wouldn't do for even half of your salary. The next day, after you failed to even begin to apologize, we've just reprogrammed our Tivo to Brian Williams. And we're really looking forward to Dan Rather's new Satellite TV venture. Can't say it's been good to know you. Poor Walter."

At 4:51 p.m., Greg Kandra, Editor at Couric & Co., sent the following response:

"We're looking forward to seeing what Dan comes up with, too! Thanks for taking the time and trouble to write. Have a great day."
