It's no secret that we love avocado toast here at Refinery29. A lot of the time, we're guilty of ordering it at restaurants, when it could just as easily be made at home. There's something about the combination of crunchy bread and smooth avocado that's just too good to pass up.

That's why we created a handy list of easy ways to improve your avocado toast -- no chef skills required. If all you're doing is mashing up an avocado and spreading it over a mediocre slice of bread, you'll definitely be left wanting a better version -- but that doesn't mean you have to spend upwards of $10 for a seriously delicious breakfast.

You'll be amazed at how much better your toast will taste with bacon bits or hot sauce, for example. Avo-toast FOMO is about to become a thing of the past.

Garnish With The Basics
Avocado toast is more than mashing up an avocado and throwing it on a slice of bread. At the minimum, you'll want to add lemon juice, a bit of salt, and maybe some pepper, onion, or even Parmesan cheese.

Spice It Up
If you're already adding red pepper flakes or ground pepper to your avocado toast, why not take things to the next level? A drizzle of hot sauce, or even some sliced peppers will do the trick.

Pile On Some Bacon
If you're not a vegetarian, adding some meat is an easy way to improve your avocado toast. Plus, bacon avocado toast is Gwyneth-approved.

And yes, making fresh bacon at home will take longer than 30 seconds (and probably more time than the rest of the avocado toast, in all). If you don't want to wait for bacon strips to become crispy, you can always use pre-cooked bacon or bacon bits on avocado toast, too.

Put An Egg On It
Avocado is already a great source of fiber and potassium, but an egg will add even more protein to your breakfast. Plus, what doesn't sound good about a perfectly runny egg atop a bed of mashed avocado?

If you don't want to fry an egg, you can still add eggs to avocado toast in a pinch. Try including a pre-made hardboiled egg (you can make a batch of them at the beginning of the week) for an easy (and delicious) upgrade.

Throw In Unexpected Veggies
Adding red onion might seem standard for avocado toast -- after all, this veggie makes an appearance in many varieties of guacamole. But have you ever thought about adding tomato and basil instead?

Top It Off With Smoked Salmon
Move over, bagels -- topping avocado toast with salmon is the new breakfast trend. NYC restaurants like Mercer Kitchen and Jack's Wife Freda are topping avocado toast with smoked salmon -- but you can easily recreate the phenomenon at home, too.

Add Some Hummus
Hummus is more versatile than you think. It might not seem like the chick-pea dip could work in harmony with avocado, but its creaminess is the perfect addition to avocado slices.
