A Winning Hand, If He'll Play It

For two smart guys, surrounded by supposed smart advisers, this is the dumbest presidential campaign I have ever witnessed. And I go back to FDR.

As a lifelong liberal Democrat, I don't care if Mitt Romney runs a dumb campaign. In fact, I rather like it. Let him and his rantings be blown to the seas.

But you, President Obama, you are the heir to FDR, Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson (ex Vietnam), Bill Clinton. You are the leader of the party of the people, by the people, for the people. What an advantage you have! And Mitt is the gift that keeps on giving. "I'm not concerned about the very poor." "I like being able to fire people."

What do you do with that advantage, Mr. President? You just throw it away. Yes, completely away. Who gives a damn if Mitt outsourced jobs, if Mitt took advantage of tax gimmicks, if he has bank accounts in Switzerland, the Cayman Islands, the moon?

Speak to your advantage, Mr. President. Play your aces. The next president will appoint one or two Supreme Court justices. If the ball goes in Mitt's mitt, there goes Roe v. Wade. Glory to the fetus; women be damned. Do you think the people want that?

Speak to the inequality between rich and the middle class, which is at a record high and is trending higher. It is obscene and Mitt would increase it further by lowering tax rates on the rich and ending the estate tax. Do you think the people want that?

Speak to jobs. Not just to the unemployed but to the many more millions who are employed but can't make ends meet. Speak to the $7.25 per hour minimum wage which, on an eight hour day, is $60 a day, $300 a week. $15,000 a year/ Speak to the employees of Wal-Mart, MacDonald, housekeepers, waiters. Ask Mitt what is he going to do for them? Cut their food stamps? Cut their Medicaid? Do you want their votes? Speak to them. They are legion.

Speak to the regulations that we the people want to take for granted but scions like George W. Bush and Mitt would like to decimate so the rich could get richer. Speak to clean air, clear water, industrial safety, mining pollution, IRS audits, food purity, banking greed, to responsibilities that Mitt would like to be rid of. Yes, and to climate change and responsibility for the earth we inhabit.

David Koch and his billionaire friends would like government of the rich, by the rich and for the rich. And they are willing to spend billions to get it. All you have, Mr. President, is the knowledge that people will with half a brain shouldn't vote with them.

That's your advantage, Mr. President. It's a winning hand. Don't blow it by talking about Bain Capital, For God's sake, the election isn't mainly about you or Mitt. It's about the party of the people versus the party of the rich. Show us that, Mr. President. Let Mitt proclaim his irrelevancies. Don't counter with your own.

They have their billions, you have the cards. PLAY THEM. PLAY THEM HARD!
