Election 2012 is one for the history books. The social media history books, at least.

We've been watching television coverage of presidential elections since 1948, but -- holograms and virtual senates notwithstanding -- it hasn't changed a whole lot: mostly anchors sitting around gabbing while they wait for returns.

But on social media, a world of content and conversation exploded. The most Tweeted-about event in U.S. political history saw heavy Facebook and Instagram action, too.

The night spawned some great original content as well. One-upping Tumblr's life-GIFFing of the presidential debates, illustrator Wendy MacNaughton live-sketched the NPR newsroom on Tumblr.
