My Conversation With Author Mary Williams and Her Mother -- Jane Fonda

Tonight on PBS, I sit down with writer Mary Williams and the woman she considers to be her second mother, Jane Fonda, to discuss Williams' fascinating new memoir, The Lost Daughter.

In the book, Mary documents a traumatic journey that includes a difficult upbringing, physical abuse, estrangement from her family, the day she moved in with Fonda and her efforts to find her place in the world.

In a sneak preview of our conversation, I ask my guests if this story could end up as another glorified Hollywood film about another black child being saved by white people. You're going to want to watch their fascinating answer below.

Our conversation airs tonight, Tuesday, April 23, on "Tavis Smiley" on PBS. Check out for your local TV listings.
