Singer Halle Bailey, who stars as Ariel in the upcoming movie, celebrated the announcement on Twitter.
The actor and singer celebrated production wrapping on the Disney film with a little taste of herself in costume on Instagram.
Despite the negativity, the 19-year-old singer and actress had only positive things to say.
The actor and singer told E! News that he "thought it was so special" that the 19-year-old, of musical duo Chloe x Halle, was cast as Ariel.
“It’s an important battle to fight and she’s not alone,” said Diana Huey, who played Ariel in a national touring production of the fairytale.
The 19-year-old singer, who is half of the R&B duo Chloe x Halle, will star as Ariel in Disney’s remake.
