Gabriel Trujillo, a 31-year-old Ph.D. student doing fieldwork in Sonora, Mexico, was shot seven times in his car by an unknown suspect.
The couple's suspected cause of death in Baja California Sur was inhalation of gas, according to reports.
They were staying in El Pescadero, Baja California Sur.
Authorities had been looking for eight young people reported missing last week when they found the site on the outskirts of Guadalajara.

The high school student's attorneys argued in a hearing Friday that the school district decision violates her free speech rights.
