One barrier hindering Latino males from completing college is the financial pressures they face to contribute financially to their families. Like Tony, Latino males tend to come from working-class backgrounds, and the urgency he and others feel to join the labor force may outweigh the long-term gains that can flow from a higher education credential.
Now that our school PA systems' are no longer spewing out stale black facts during morning announcements and history teachers are done glossing over the minuscule civil rights unit of their obsolete textbooks, it is time to finally ask ourselves this lingering question: what happens once black history month is over?
The emergence of the school-to-prison pipeline has been impacted by trends in school disciplinary practices and zero tolerance policies. It is our challenge to dismantle this pipeline and create new pipelines to success for all children. In order to undertake in this endeavor, we must first become knowledgeable on this contemporary civil rights issue.
