Li Jinjin, 66, a dissident legal scholar who was jailed for two years in China, was stabbed to death in the city where he had long worked as an immigration lawyer.
The 26-foot tall Pillar of Shame was made by Danish sculptor Jens Galschiøt to symbolize the lives lost during the bloody military crackdown on pro-democracy protesters.
A Chinese Embassy statement said "bullies" will "end up in the ash heap of history."
