The growth rate was the slowest since 1917 to 1918, when the nation was involved in World War I, according to new Census Bureau numbers.
Most of the biggest increases were in areas both rural and Southern.

Two former Census Bureau directors said they were puzzled by the agency's request.
The Census report found that 27.5 million people, 8.5% of the population, lacked health insurance coverage in 2018.
