Cuando Román 'Rocky' Martínez sube al ring, los fanáticos saben que van a ver una pelea de mucha acción. He tenido la oportunidad de verlo combatir en varias ocasiones y a la verdad que en cada encuentro se da al 100%.
Viene a mi memoria la pelea que realizó ante el entonces campeón mundial superpluma, el inglés Nicky Cook, donde el boricua fue a 'bailar a la casa del trompo' (Inglaterra) para retar al campeón.
Dicho encuentro se celebró el 14 de marzo de 2009 ante casa llena. Era la primera vez que 'Rocky' peleaba por una faja mundial, donde tuvo la oportunidad de ver su sueño hecho realidad cuando le arrebató el título a Cook, con un nocaut técnico en 4 asaltos.
Martínez desea conquistar la faja mundial superpluma por segunda ocasión, pero primero tiene que pasar una gran prueba cuando enfrente al excelente púgil azteca Miguel Beltrán, Junior, encuentro que se ha de celebrar el sábado 4 de agosto en el Coliseo Rubén Rodríguez de Bayamón, Puerto Rico.
En entrevista que nos concediera, 'Rocky' Román nos habló sobre el combate y el entrenamiento que está llevando a cabo para su importante compromiso.
Se anunció que estarás viendo acción en la cartelera 'La guerra' donde la pelea estelar será entre tu compatriota Wilfredo Vázquez, Junior y el mexicano Rafael Márquez, ¿qué te ha parecido la noticia?
''Hasta ahora hay buenos planes conmigo, estaremos enfrentando al mexicano Miguel Beltrán, Junior. Una pelea eliminatoria para optar por el título".
¿Cuándo fuiste informado que estarías incluido en el cartel boxístico?
''En estos días cuadré todo con la empresa y quedamos pelear en la cartelera de Wilfredo Vázquez".
Aun sin conocer la fecha cuando estarías combatiendo, ¿te encontrabas entrenando?
"Sí, este es mi trabajo, yo no dejo de entrenar para mantenerme. Entrenando fuerte para que cuando aparezca una oportunidad estar siempre activo y en buenas condiciones".
Llevas 10 meses sin pelear, ¿crees que el tiempo que has estado fuera del ring afecte tu rendimiento?
''No creo, eso le afecta a los peleadores que no se mantienen en el gimnasio. Nosotros siempre nos mantenemos entrenando y guanteando. Creo que eso a mi no me va afectar nada".
¿Es la primera vez que estás tanto tiempo sin pelear?
''He estado un año sin pelear, que fue el año pasado completo y pelee ahora en septiembre. Tuve un año completito, pelee y lucí bastante bien. Creo que es la dedicación mia, estar siempre en el gimnasio me ayuda bastante''.
Como me indicaras, tu rival será el boxeador mexicano Miguel Beltrán, Junior, ¿Qué conoces de él?
"Es un muy buen peleador, el mismo récord que yo. Él tiene una pelea más, 27. Un peleador aguerrido. Va ser una pelea fuerte, bien fuerte".
''Sí, vi unos cuantos videos de él cuando peleó con Juan Carlos Salgado y otros videos. Es un peleador de cuidado, tenemos que ir al 100% para poder optar por la victoria".
¿Veremos a un 'Rocky' fajador o técnico?
''Los dos, estamos trabajando con mucha inteligencia, muchos movimientos, muchos laterales. Solo es como me acomode al estilo de él, si él viene, huye. Voy hacer la pelea para salir con la victoria esa noche. Me estoy jugando todo o nada. Es la pelea más importante para poder después optar por el título".
¿Qué le puedes decir a la fanaticada?
''Que se den cita el 4 de agosto para ver las guerras de 'Rocky' y más ahora que es un mexicano, que va ser una guerra para la historia''.
