Caregiving 101

November is National Family Caregivers month. I want to share two great books that I found informative and comforting. When I moved my Mom who had Alzheimer's Disease to New York to live with me, my bachelorette pad had to accommodate two. I was free fall in a world of caregiver stuff; meds, VNS, home health aides, walkers and shower chairs. Overtime I learned to give shots, dress pressure ulcers, give bed baths and roll bed linens. When I attended information sessions and support groups at the Alzheimer's Association Coach Broyles book was available on their website. His book, Coach Broyles' Playbook for Alzheimer's Caregivers is the real deal on home care. Christopher Buckley's book Losing Mom and Pop will make you simultaneously laugh and cry. His memoir of caregiving for both parents Pat Buckley and William F. Buckley will make you giggle in recognition of the challenges and weep in living through the circle of life. "Father die. Son die. Happy life."
