Last week #HeterosexualPrideDay became a thing. This staggering social media movement embodied the struggles of heterosexual people around the world in an attempt to increase visibility surrounding heterosexual issues. What are those heterosexual issues you ask?

The answer might be more difficult to find than you think. Heterosexual people live in a society built from the ground up with their needs in mind making issues in their "community" rather difficult to find. Many recognized this and mocked the day. While most people failed to address the underlying issue. If heterosexual people believe a pride day is solely about being proud of who you are, they are wrong. Giving heterosexual people a pride day totally misunderstands what pride is. Specifically it misunderstands what LGBT pride is and perpetuates a toxic idea that all sexual identities need pride.

Delia Melody hoped that we'd be past this straight pride nonsense. She wants to break down the misconception that pride is solely about LGBT people having a gender identity. This is obviously true for heterosexual people too. However, LGBT people face institutional oppression, violence, and discrimination for their gender identity. In a society where it is defiant to be LGBT, having pride is literally an act of rebellion against a system designed to marginalize you. Pride is something you need to stand for, it's something you need to embody to push for change.

Heterosexual people are not oppressed anywhere in the world. They don't need pride. Anyone who believes that heterosexual people need pride need your love, acceptance, and education. Encourage positivity and try to establish a dialogue around pride. Open communication can solve all problems, especially the ones motivated by ignorance.
